Flaws are what make characters interesting. But when their weaknesses are overwhelming, they lose the part of themselves that made me care for them. The balance shifts from my caring about them to my disillusionment and disappointment in them. The love between Caroline and Rogan begins. They both feel it. Rogan is sensitive to her husbands recent death and gives her time. He even discusses this with his so-called best friend, Bridger. Rogan sends the dog named Sweet Girl to Caroline and Rachel. Caroline doesn't get that he's calling her Sweet Girl. Hard hearted Caroline writes Rogan a dear John letter, which he inexplicably accepts. We only hear about one letter from Rogan to Caroline and he is out of the future picture for her. I guess, coming between life-long friends is not worth her consideration. Caroline subscribes to the Love the One You're With philosophy. (Strike One) Bridger took his brothers wife. Now he takes the woman his friend has told him his friend is falling for. (Strike Two). Rogan easily gives up and begins to fall in love with the picture of Bridger's sister that Bridger cleverly gave to him. (Strike Three. I'm out!) There is no one left that I care about. But, I mourn the love I felt developing between Rogan and Caroline, and the friendship Rogan felt for Bridger. Liked the setting of the book, civil war times. Took me back to much harder times. Maybe the way we should live. They didn’t complain about the hard work. People were used to it. Work had to be done even if it was the hard way.Reminded me that there were much harder times for all of us not just whites.Hoping there is a series of books like this.
